Fare Increases and Service Cuts Are Not Enough, M.T.A. Warns

Even with the fare increases and service cuts planned for next year, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority might raise fares again in 2006, transit officials said yesterday. Without more financial help from the city and state, the authority will face an estimated $1.4 billion budget shortfall in 2006, leaving it no other option but to raise fares again, said the authority's executive director, Katherine N. Lapp, during a public hearing in Brooklyn.
